2 weeks old

Twins- Miss Blue and Mr. Red
There is so much to worry about with newborn pups. I always breath a sigh of relief when puppies pass the 14 day mark. Now, their eyes are open and they are recognizing Chili and myself as soon as we get close to the whelping box. They are playing with each other and starting to make messes. I am taking full advantage of this time, however, as I know it will be much, much harder when they are on solid food and Chili is no longer cleaning up after them.
It is great to see the contortions puppies go through to get the best spot on the milk bar.

Week 1

Sleeping puppies are so cute!! I love Mr. Red's square muzzle
The first week has flown by and the puppies are doing great. All are well over 1 lb with Miss Purple and Mr. Yellow leading the pack and Mr. Red close behind. Miss Black & Tan is the smallest in the litter with Miss Silver the next smallest though they are, themselves, not very small. I think it is funny that the largest in the litter are black & tan and silver and the smallest are the black & tan and silver. All the tawny pups fill the middle ranks. The pups weathered the blizzard with no problems. I still need to drag Chili out of the whelping box to potty, so she is there to keep them warm, even if the power/heat goes out. Thank goodness for fireplaces!! This week is a lot of sleeping puppy photos- they still don't do much except sleep, eat, and potty. I am looking forward to the next few weeks when their personalities start coming out. Then I will be able to match up puppies to names and stop calling them by colors.
The milk bar is already looking crowded and it is only the first week!

Puppy pile. I like how Miss Purple's head is coming out of Miss Silver's body. Very Frankenstein.

Taking turns- a snack and a nap

My favorite photos are of the pups using each other as pillows. Mr. Red is a favored pillow and here Miss Blue and Miss Silver take advantage.

Miss Blue also has a very cute face

Kila and Jiggles check out the pups. I love Kila's eyes- they almost bugged out of her head. She was so excited. Her tail was wagging so hard, she was knocking stuff all over the room. She is not going to be allowed free time with the pups until they are a few weeks old. Kila is very sweet but huge and very clumsy. I have visions of puppies getting flung all over the place in her excitement. It will be a blast when she has pups of her own!!

While Chili is inside nursing pups, the rest of the pack was enjoying the winter weather. Here Kila tries to entice Tay, Jiggles, and Brett to place some winter baseball.

The harder it snows, the more fun they have.

Welcome to the World

The Moonsong Deadliest Catch litter is here! All the pups are large and vigerous. The smallest pup is just shy of 1 pound. I decided to name the pups after the boats on the show 'Deadliest Catch' for a couple reasons. One- I love the show-it is exciting, educational, and it leaves me in awe when I see what these crab fisherman do for a living. Two- I live in the Puget Sound area of Washington state and fishing is an important part of the history of this region. The pups will be named: Cornelia Marie, Early Dawn, Northwestern, Time Bandit, Wizard, Farwest Leader, Fierce Allegiance, Sea Rover, and Dutch Harbor ( which is not a boat but is the base of operations for the crab fishing fleet). I have not assigned each name to individual pups yet as I am going to see which pup fits which name as they get older. The pups will keep these names as their official registered names but the new owners will be able to pick the call names.

Chili rests after a mid day delivery. She also delivered her first litter mid day, which is wonderful for me!

This is the entrance to the 'wolf den' in my backyard. The dogs have excavated a large den that spreads several feet underground. I like that the entrance is quite small and hides the extent of their digging. Chili was committed to having her litter outside and 3 pups were born outside- with me watching her so I was able to get them in right away. It took a lot of begging on my part to get her to have the other pups inside.

The silver pups

The black and tan girls - the smaller girl is a pound, so you can see how huge the other girl is! The larger girl reminds me of my Black/Tan Kila ( Channahon's Kilakota Song). Kila was also a large pup and has grown to be one of the bigger Chinook females I have seen.Mr. Red
